Swine flu: Sanofi-Aventis knew?

Sanofi-aventis invests € 100 million to build a vaccine plant seasonal and pandemic influenza in Mexico.

Mexico City, Mexico - March 9, 2009

Agreement signed in Mexico City during the State visit of President Nicolas Sarkozy

Sanofi-aventis (EURONEXT: SAN and NYSE: SNY) announced today the signing of a contract with the Mexican authorities for the construction of a factory production of vaccine against influenza, representing an investment of 100 million euros.


The announcement was made during a ceremony in the presence of MM. Felipe Calderon, President of Mexico and Nicolas Sarkozy, President of the French Republic, an official visit to Mexico.
This plant will be built and operated by sanofi pasteur, the vaccines division of sanofi-aventis, represented by Chris Viehbacher , CEO of sanofi-aventis.


" With the construction of this plant, sanofi-aventis is proud to contribute to strengthening the health infrastructure of Mexico and would like to acknowledge the exemplary commitment to public health in this country, through its program Vaccination against influenza and pandemic preparedness , "said Chris Viehbacher . "This investment demonstrates local commitment of sanofi-aventis for global health. This facility will benefit public health, and for Mexicans that for Latin America, as part of influenza pandemic preparedness .
The contract was signed by representatives of respective Birmex ( Biologicos Laboratorio de Mexico y Reactivos ) and sanofi-aventis in the presence of Dr. José Ángel Córdova Villalobos , Minister of Health of Mexico.




Under the terms of the agreement, sanofi pasteur would manufacture the vaccine against influenza in collaboration with Birmex, Mexican vaccines. The latter perform certain stages of production and will be responsible for distribution of vaccines against influenza Procurement in Mexico.
Sanofi pasteur plans to start construction of this plant for vaccine production in a few weeks. Its aim is to produce up to 25 million annual doses of vaccine against seasonal influenza for the Mexican market within four years. This new plant vaccine against influenza will be built Ocoyoacac where sanofi aventis has an industrial activity.




The new plant in Mexico sanofi pasteur will be built to standards allowing sanofi pasteur to switch easily from the production of vaccine against seasonal flu vaccine against that of influenza pandemic in the event that a human influenza pandemic comes to be declared and once the pandemic strain of influenza identified by the World Health Organization (WHO).
